A master degree program in Kazakhstan means one of two things for Indian students. If you have qualified NEET and want to become a doctor, it is the six-year MD (Doctor of Medicine) program, Kazakhstan's version of MBBS, which you can study in English at public universities such as M. Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University for a tuition fee of $3,900 a year in 2026-27. If you already hold a bachelor's degree, it is a postgraduate master's program (locally called magistracy) that runs for one to two years. This guide covers both routes, with most of the detail on the MD, because that is the question Kerala families bring to our desk most often.

Every fee figure below comes from the official 2026-27 fee sheet we hold for Kozybayev University. Rules and regulations are linked to their original sources, such as the National Medical Commission and Kazakhstan's national ENIC centre, so you can check them yourself before you sign anything.

Why the MD in Kazakhstan Is Often Called a Master Degree

Here is where a lot of confusion starts. In Kazakhstan, the basic medical degree is called General Medicine, and the graduate receives the title of doctor. In the 2019-20 academic year, the country moved to integrated six-year medical programs that combine internship and master's level training in a single course instead of the old five plus two model. Universities taking part in this reform describe the final diploma as carrying both a master's degree and a doctor's qualification.

For an Indian student, though, the way India treats it is what counts. The National Medical Commission sees this as a primary medical qualification, the same level as MBBS. It is not the same as a postgraduate MD from an Indian medical college. After returning, you still clear the licensing exam and can then appear for NEET PG to specialise. We explain this in the very first meeting, because some agents blur the line and families end up with the wrong expectations.

Why Students Are

Choosing Kazakhstan for Higher Education

  • European-style degree structure. Kazakhstan joined the Bologna Process in 2010, so its bachelor, master and PhD levels follow the same three-cycle system used across Europe, with credits built on the ECTS model.
  • Public universities at accessible fees. A full six-year MD at a state university like Kozybayev costs less in tuition than a single year at many private medical colleges in India.
  • A growing international student body. Close to 30,000 foreign students study across more than 100 Kazakh universities, so you are not walking into an unfamiliar system alone.
  • Government scholarships. Under the Study in Kazakhstan scholarship program, the Ministry of Science and Higher

Education offers 550 funded places for foreign students every year, including places at master's level.

  • English-medium medicine. International MD streams are taught in English, which is a non-negotiable NMC condition for Indian students.

  • Faculty of Medicine
  • Faculty of Engineering and Digital Technology
  • Faculty of History, Economics and Law
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Popular specialties for international students include General Medicine, Pharmacy, Information Technology and Engineering. Students who come for a postgraduate master's usually look at the engineering, IT, economics and natural science departments.

What Student Life in Petropavl Is Really Like

Petropavl is a calm, compact city close to the Russian border. Daily costs are lower than in Almaty or Astana, and there are fewer distractions, which many of our students actually prefer during the heavy pre-clinical years. The one thing we tell every family upfront is the weather. Winters are long, and temperatures regularly fall well below minus 20°C. Good thermal clothing and proper boots are part of your budget, not an afterthought.

Students who join through UniWhereCity get a homely hostel with Kerala food, which makes the first winter a lot easier on both the student and the parents back home.

NMC Rules to Check

Before You Join Any MD Program in Kazakhstan

Since 18 November 2021, every Indian student starting medicine abroad falls under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. You can read the NMC's official FAQ on the FMGL Regulations yourself. The key conditions are:

  • A course of at least 54 months, taught in English
  • A 12-month internship in the same foreign university where you studied
  • The entire course, training and internship completed at that one institution, with no transfers midway
  • Eligibility to register and practise medicine in Kazakhstan, on par with local graduates
  • A further 12-month supervised internship in India after you return

One more point most agents skip: the NMC does not approve or rank individual foreign universities. A university becomes a safe choice when its program meets every FMGL condition, not because a brochure says "NMC approved". Kazakhstan is also revising its medical training model, so the split between study years and internship can differ between batches. Before paying, ask the university to confirm in writing how your batch's study months and internship are structured. We do this check for every student we place.

What Happens After Your

MD in Kazakhstan

Returning to Practise in India

Graduates take the FMGE, conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, which will be replaced by NExT once it is rolled out for foreign graduates. After clearing it and finishing the 12-month internship in India, you can register with a state medical council and prepare for NEET PG to pursue an Indian MD or MS.

Specialising in Kazakhstan or Abroad

Graduates who stay can apply for residency in Kazakhstan, which currently lasts two to four years depending on the specialty. Others prepare for exams like USMLE or PLAB. If that is your plan, confirm that the university appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Postgraduate Master's

Programs in Kazakhstan for Graduates

If you already have a bachelor's degree in engineering, IT, commerce or science, a master's in Kazakhstan is a practical, low-cost option. • Admission usually involves a test or interview in your specialty and a foreign language
  • Every program ends with a thesis or final project

A profile master's takes 1 to 1.5 years and a scientific and pedagogical master's takes 2 years. The MD medical program takes 6 years.
